Evoking myth and religion, the newest creation by Greek director-choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou dazzles with meticulous craft, imaginative play, and visual intensity. Like The Great Tamer, his internationally acclaimed, Next Wave 2019 sold-out sensation, Transverse Orientation induces awe on a massive scale, set to the music of Vivaldi. With dreamlike, painterly composition—and the rendering of a bull, in all of its lifelike power—it will make you wonder what’s real. Papaioannou—one of the first choreographers to create new work for Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal in 45 years—exacts striking formal language, along with the best of experimental theater art.

BAM DEBUT – Part of Next Wave 2022
The beloved ancient Korean musical storytelling form of pansori fuses with K-pop and Greek tragedy in an incredible production from the National Theater of Korea and visionary Singaporean director Ong Keng Sen. K-pop producer and Parasite composer Jung Jae-il created the original music in collaboration with renowned pansori master Ahn Sook-sun, a Living National Treasure in South Korea. Set after the sacking of Troy, Trojan Women sweeps audiences up in the heartbreak and determination of the city’s female survivors. Through a whirlwind of music, dance, and theater—brought to life by over 25 singers, actors, and musicians—emerges a stunning portrait of resilience in the face of war and occupation.
After sold-out runs at the National Theater of Korea in Seoul and Singapore International Arts Festival followed by acclaimed runs in London, Amsterdam and Vienna, Trojan Women finally comes to BAM for its US debut.

Join The Meteor for Meet the Moment—a powerful day of ideas, inspiration, and intergenerational collaboration among some of the most influential women and nonbinary leaders of our time. The Meteor is a collective of journalists, artists, and activists committed to gender and racial justice. Together we’ll take on issues such as voting rights, the climate crisis, abortion access, gender justice, and everything in between. From 11 am to 4 pm, the event will feature talks, performances, comedy, and interactive sessions so you can converse with iconic changemakers. Our season of Art History Happy Hours continues with an evening of lighthearted lectures and accompanying wines inspired by Monet to Morisot: The Real and Imagined in European Art. Delve into themes of labor, colonialism, and nature with Lisa Small, Senior Curator, European Art; Talia Shiroma, Curatorial Assistant; Maya Jeffereis, artist; and Celeste Mahoney, former Brooklyn Museum Project Conservator. During the program, enjoy wine pairings by Marquis Williams of the Brooklyn-based wine club Highly Recommended.

Overview
The Ivalas Quartet, Caramoor’s 2022 – 23 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, was formed at the University of Michigan in 2017. Dedicated to the celebration of diverse voices, Ivalas seeks to disrupt the classical music world by continuously spotlighting Black and Indigenous composers such as Eleanor Alberga, whose First String Quartet is featured on the Quartet’s fall performance in the Music Room, alongside quartets by Osvaldo Golijov and Beethoven.

Overview
British countertenor Iestyn Davies has won two Gramophone Awards, a Grammy Award, an RPS Award for Young Singer of the Year, the Critics’ Circle Award, and an Olivier Award nomination, as well as being awarded the MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List 2017 for services to music. In concert with lutenist Thomas Dunford, the founder and artistic director of the Jupiter Ensemble who BBC Magazine called “the Eric Clapton of the lute,” Davies presents a program of Late Renaissance Italian, French, and English songs interspersed with solo lute music.

ABOUT THE SHOW
Bold, thoughtful, and endlessly swinging, pianist and composer Renee Rosnes has performed across the world as a leader and sought-after collaborator. Her distinguished career continues to reach higher levels marked by new music and exciting collaborations. Early on, she established a stellar reputation, touring and recording with masters Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, James Moody, JJ Johnson, Bobby Hutcherson, and Ron Carter. Rosnes is a founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective, and is the musical director of the all-star band ARTEMIS.
Most recently featured at Rose Theater alongside Herbie Hancock and other master pianists during Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Celebrating Chick Corea” concerts, Rosnes returns to Dizzy’s Club to showcase her latest release Kinds of Love. As pianist Billy Childs penned in the album liner notes, “Renee Rosnes stands at the summit of pianist-composers who have left—and continue to leave—an indelible mark on this music.”

ABOUT THE SHOW
Beloved trombone master Wycliffe Gordon—a former star of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Wynton Marsalis Septet—brings a deep, energetic pocket to every bandstand. He continues a celebrated Jazz at Lincoln Center tradition, kicking off the holiday season with a five-night stay at Dizzy’s Club and a special performance on Thanksgiving. Gordon’s dynamic command of big bands and small ensembles radiates from his mind and body through the bell of his horn. Says Marsalis, “Just his presence is a creative experience.”
On Thanksgiving Day, November 24, Dizzy’s Club will serve a festive three-course prix fixe Thanksgiving feast.

ABOUT THE CONCERT
Shades of Django with Stéphane Wrembel is French-born guitarist Stéphane Wrembel’s celebration of the legacy of Belgian-born Manouche Romany guitarist-composer Django Reinhardt (1910–1953), the first non-American jazz genius, whose improvisational abilities were on par with the greatest of American soloists. Joined by special guests mandolin virtuoso Sam Bush, rising piano star Sean Mason, and fellow French-born vocalist Cyrille Aimeé for his first Jazz at Lincoln Center mainstage concert after a successful Fall 2021 engagement at Dizzy’s Club, Wrembel, who specializes in Reinhardt’s “Hot Jazz” style, will interpret the different phases of Django’s storied career.

Another old friend of JALC is Steve Miller, the renowned blues-rock guitarist, multi-platinum-selling singer/songwriter, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and 2020 Songwriters Hall of Fame entrant. Joined by a number of guest artists, Miller presents his 6th annual exploration of a different flavor of the blues on Steve Miller on Steve Miller: A Blues and Rock and Roll Journey. “We believe that American roots music—different types of regional blues, country music, early rock-and-roll—is one of the fundamentals of jazz,” Wynton Marsalis says. “We need to return to that music to get to the bottom of a fundamental understanding of ourselves.”

COLLABORATIVE PAPER MARBLING

Led by cultural worker and teaching artist Fan Kong, this workshop will introduce beginners to suminagashi, the oldest paper marbling technique. This meditative practice involves floating colors on the surface of water and delicately transferring them to paper. Each participant will learn to create and experiment with suminagashi in small groups. Along the way, we will reflect on and challenge traditional thinking processes through creative problem solving and mindfulness.

WORLD PREMIERE
The season kicks off with Pulitzer Prize-winner Quiara Alegría Hudes’s return to Signature for the second play in her Premiere Residency (following the 2016 world premiere of Daphne’s Dive), the stage adaptation of her memoir My Broken Language. The world premiere production, directed by Hudes and colliding monologue, literary reading, music, and movement in its depiction of an author growing up in a Puerto Rican family in Philadelphia, continues a momentous moment for the playwright: in 2021, she released the acclaimed book on which the play is based, and her Tony-nominated stage musical collaboration with Lin Manuel-Miranda, In the Heights, reached audiences around the world as a beloved major motion picture. (Hudes penned the book in the Broadway production and the film’s screenplay).

Born and raised in the Bronx, rising star Samara Joy’s velvety, smooth voice puts her own enchanting interpretation on jazz standards from the Great American Songbook. After winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition at the age of 19, she released her debut album Samara Joy. As one of America’s most promising young vocalists, she has already performed in many of the great jazz venues in New York, including Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, The Blue Note and the Apollo as well as at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. On her latest release, Linger Awhile, 22-year-old Samara Joy makes her case to join the likes of Sarah, Ella and Billie as the next jazz singing sensation recorded by the venerable Verve Records.
