Established in 1914, the legendary Harlem theater has housed some of music's most talented performers in the world. Designated a national Landmark, the Apollo has launched the careers of icons such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, James Brown, and Lauryn Hill and continues to maintain its position as the nation's most popular arena for emerging and established African-American and Latino performers.
Great Performances operates the concession and intermission bars on performance nights, providing beverages and light fare. The theater also features Great Performances' catering for all private, fundraising, and corporate clients and for special events held on the Apollo Theater Stage, Soundstage, and Lobby Atrium.
Since 1934, every Wednesday night at 7:30 PM, aspiring artists and performers have graced the stage of the Apollo Theater in the hope that the magic of the hallowed stage and the approval of the infamous audience will launch their careers in the entertainment world. Apollo Wednesday night alumni is an impressive, ever expanding roster of world class talent including such legends as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Ben. E. King, Jackie Wilson, The Isley Brothers, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Fat Joe, Lauryn Hill, Dru Hill, Blu Cantrell, and many others.
