A look back to a few 1920s etiquette and common manners in the age of Jay Gatsby. There could be a whole literary review and thesis written discussing this, comparing then and now. For times sake we will keep this short and sweet.

This month I am so excited to invite our Director of Catering, Mike Warren, to interview the incredibly talented and fabulous Baz Luhrmann, who directed this season’s block buster hit The Great Gatsby. Mike worked tirelessly for weeks to create the speakeasy after party with Warner Brothers and Samantha Sackler Productions, which took place in the gilded, turn of the century, Grand Ballroom. Read further to find out about Baz’s socks.

After a few quiet weeks in February I was ready for March to hit with a bang! Many people say to me around that time that wedding season must be kicking off soon! In years past “wedding season” starts towards mid April and May but in 2013 “wedding season” kicked off a little earlier than usual! On March 9th The Plaza played host to an extraordinary wedding that has set the tone for the rest of the year!

“The hardest job kids face today is learning good manners without seeing any”.- Fred Astaire Mr. Manners wants to discuss this month how do we know good manners when we so rarely see them in action? In the world of social media and electronic devices consuming our every waking moments, how can we exercise the art of being polite, helping someone by holding the door for them or the very simple act of saying hello and thank you?

There are certainly times when I feel like I am repeating myself daily in this job, “Congratulations on your upcoming Wedding Celebration” are words that I speak quite frequently with great enthusiasm. Then there are days when I feel like I have a certain connection to people right off the bat, even over the phone and sometimes I forget to congratulate them because we are off to plot our ideas right away. This was definitely the case when Ashley Furman called me in February in 2012 we connected immediately, and I knew that she was meant to host her Wedding at The Plaza. And we hadn’t even met!

Have you ever wondered what a wedding would look like if it were the joining of a computer programmer for Etsy and a freelance writer/blogger? Well wonder no more. These New York nuptials are the crème de la crème…all out gorgeous…an explosion of beautiful fall details and maybe our new favorite wedding to date. Of course, no wedding is complete without the fabulous vendors behind the scenes and this wedding is boasting some mega-heavy hitters. Robert Sukrachand lent his hand to the picture perfect images while Hatch Creative Studio created a masterpiece of floral proportions. THE Sylvia Weinstock made one extremely gorgeous cake and the paper goods were tackled by Hello!Lucky AND Ceci New York. All in all, total perfection.

A year and a half ago when I met Julie and her family I knew that it was good to be a Gurland! Then when I met her fiancé Brad and his family and I quickly realized that this wedding was not only about two people creating one life together but this was about the coming together of two fantastic families! Julie and Brad both come from extremely loving and devoted families and each of their parents have certainly set a fantastic example of what marriage should look like. Julie is 1 of 4 children and Brad is 1 of 3 children and you can tell just how close they are to their families when they are all together. Julie & Brad’s wedding was one of those parties that anyone would have had a fantastic time attending. They wanted to create a very elegant yet relaxed atmosphere where their guests could get dressed up, eat a fantastic meal but really ultimately enjoy the energy of the dance party!

Christine Paul of Christine Paul Events and I have worked on many weddings together but when she told me about her clients, Amanda and Matt, I knew that they belonged at The Plaza. When we all met this past January, there was energy between all of us that proved that we were all meant to work together.

I have to admit, I might have been more excited about this wedding than the couple was. Last Saturday evening, one of the coolest weddings in my opinion, happened at BAM. In one night, the lobby was buzzing (roaring) with a trio of events: the wedding with the gregarious couple's devoted entourage, pre-production of Vh1 Divas and Paula Adbul, and a Robert Redford film restrospective featuring Robert Redford himself. The bridal couple was in great spirits, being able to share their night with such notable names and moments in BAM's history.

It’s certainly not every Saturday that we get the pleasure of hosting a fabulous Russian Wedding. Saturday, September 29th was certainly a Saturday to remember! When Tina & Felix tied the knot they did it in true Russian tradition and gave their guests a feast for all of their senses. When I met Tina and her family I felt a connection right away as we quickly realized that this was actually not the first time we had met, but that’s a different story. It was certainly fun to reconnect and realize that I had also worked with some of her friends. She and Felix knew they wanted to be married at The Plaza and with the help of her loving family the planning was under way!

Jazz at Lincoln Center is a transformative setting for any event with its brilliant city views and dramatic space. Corporate, Non-Profit, and Entertainment alike. But probably the most magical event is the Wedding. Not only because it signifies two lives coming together, but because weddings create lifelong memories.
