A horror film unlike any other, Dreyer's Vampyr reinvents the genre with nary any of its recognizable trappings. Revealing a series of mysterious goings-on at an ancient castle, Dreyer forsakes strict narrative structure and instead crafts a masterpiece of mood, using gauze filters and expressionistic lighting to create a fractured, dream-like atmosphere of sustained dread. Unsettling and hauntingly beautiful, Vampyr is arguably the director's most radical, formally experimental work.
