Cult director's Rollin's psychedelic romp (which he called "for many my most accomplished film") follows two newlyweds whose honeymoon takes them to an ancient castle populated by philosophy-spouting hippy vampires who set about spreading their concept of free love—and vampiric nature—to the frigid young bride. Rollin viciously deconstructs the exploitation mold with art-damaged stylistic excess—striking color filters, Gothic set design, ruminations on ennui, and a prog rock score by teenage band Acanthus.
