Wallace Shawn tackles politically charged and controversial topics in his written work that sometimes seem in contradiction to his often affable and comic stage and screen performances. The Obie Award-winning playwright has written nine plays, including Marie and Bruce (1978), Aunt Dan and Lemon (1985), and The Designated Mourner (1997). In his newest work Essays (2009), Shawn writes on art, war, culture, politics, and privilege, challenging his readers to discard their own perspectives and view life through a fresh lens.
