Property from the Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art introduces the sale with a selection of trompe l'oeils, still lifes and La Barre Goodwin's trophies of the hunt, a masterpiece of precisely rendered details. Property Sold to benefit the Heckscher Museum features luminous coastal scenes by William Trost Richards and Edward Moran, as well as charming Impressionist landscapes. Blanche Lazell, Thomas Hart Benton and Joseph Stella are each represented in the sale with highly colored modernist oils, and Clyde Singer's Ain't Gonna Rain is a masterpiece of mid-century social realism, a closely observed study of a stylish African American woman and her child. Jacob Lawrence's Physchiatric Therapy has a long and important exhibition history, from The Downtown Gallery in 1950 to the Whitney Museum in 2002.
The sale features a strong section of Western Art including our cover lot by Joseph Henry Sharp and a rare group of works from the '40's by Roger Medearis.
