El Cafe Celebrates Dia de los Muertos

Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday that has been celebrated for over 3000 years. The Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations created the holiday as a joyous occasion emphasizing the continuity of life marked by a tribute to deceased friends and family.

Today, the holiday continues. Celebrants don wooden skull masks called calacas and dance in honor of their deceased relatives.

Celebrated rituals on Day of the Dead include decorating gravesites, building altars within the home, and eating specialty foods. These dishes include pan de muerto (a sweet bread in honor of the dead) and sugar skulls (made with the names of the dead person on the forehead), as well as mole and tamales (both particular to Mexican cuisine) and candied pumpkins.
