The Oscars: Viewing Party Essentials
CPS Events at The Plaza

February is the month of love. Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate the ones you love, whether you’re celebrating with friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, or wives; it’s the universal day of love. However, I believe that what makes February wonderful is not this chocolate filled holiday but rather one of the most important nights in the world of cinema, The Oscars! Having grown up in a family that loves movies, the night of the Oscars is almost more important than Christmas! Naturally I had to continue this tradition into my everyday routine after moving out.

Aside from the awards, the red carpet, and the various performances, what makes this night great is the ability to spend it with friends and family. So here’s all you need to know to make your viewing party truly spectacular.

1.  Dress Code: Switch up your Sunday and come dressed like your favorite celebrity. Team up with a friend and pull off a couple’s outfit. Matching wingtips anyone?

2.  Décor: Create your own Hollywood Walk of Fame. Tape some glitter stars to the floor.

3.  Put your phone away! Even if your movie knowledge is lacking, print out these bingo cards from Pure Wow to get everyone in the mood. Keep an eye out for things like someone forgetting who they’re wearing, music cutting off someone’s speech, or awkward red carpet interviews.

4.  Cocktails: I love nothing more than themed food & drink. Get the party going with a Red Carpet Cocktail. Rim champagne classes in red/white sugar. Combine red grapefruit juice, blood orange juice or orange juice with Clementine-flavored vodka. Add a bottle of pink Prosecco and stir. Voilà! A delicious red cocktail for you and your friends.

5.  Non-Alcoholic: Lionade – In a pitcher combine a cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice with five cups of water, almost a cup of thyme infused simple syrup (make the same way you would regular simple syrup, steep with thyme and remove after 10 minutes), and ice cubes. Note: Add gin for a little something extra!

Plan for your Arrivals with these classics:

1.  Manchester by the Caesar:

-  2 Romaine Lettuce Hearts

-  ½ an English Cucumber

-  Seasoned Croutons

-  1 Cup Grape Tomatoes

-  ¼ Cup Chopped Fresh Parsley

-  Cubed Chicken Breast (Optional)

Dressing Ingredients

-  ¾ Cup Plain Greek Yogurt

-  ½ Cup Fresh Parm Cheese

-  3 Tablespoons Olive Oil

-  3 Tablespoons Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice

-  1 ½ Teaspoon Dijon Mustard

-  1 Large Garlic Clove

Separate the romaine hearts and arrange on a plate to make taco style Caesar salad. Combine all dressing ingredients in a blender/food processor until smooth. Spoon fresh dressing onto romaine hearts then top with halved grape tomatoes, croutons, and cucumber – adding cubes of grilled chicken is optional! Sprinkle with fresh pepper and fresh parsley. Crunchy goodness!!

2.  La La Lasagna

-  2 Tablespoons Butter

-  1 Tablespoon Minced Garlic

-  2 Teaspoons Minced fresh thyme

-  1 Bag Fresh Spinach

-  2 lbs. Ricotta Cheese

-  1 Egg

-  ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

-  12 No-Boil Whole Wheat Lasagna Noodles

-  1 Jar of Marinara Sauce

-  1 Baggy Shredded Mozzarella Cheese

-  Salt to Taste

First heat the butter over medium heat, add garlic, thyme and sauce. Then add the spinach and continue to sauté for about 2 minutes then remove from heat. In a bowl combine ricotta, egg, salt, nutmeg and a squeeze of lemon juice (this is optional) with the spinach. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

Spread a little bit of marinara sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 pan. Layer the pan with 3 lasagna noodles, ⅓ of the spinach mixture, ¼ of the tomato sauce, and ¼ of the cheese. Then repeat and pour a ½ cup of water over the two layers. Repeat one more time but make sure to end lots of cheese. Pour another half cup of water over the whole thing then cover with foil.

Bake for 30-40 minutes, then once it begins to bubble, remove the foil and bake once more for 10 minutes. Let stand for at least 10 more minutes before serving.

3.  Hidden Fajitas

First marinate the chicken with the lime juice, chili powder, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and cumin. Cut all vegetables into strips and toss with salt, pepper, and olive oil. Grill over medium heat for 15ish minutes. Over medium heat, grill chicken until cooked through, then slice into strips and combine with cooked peppers & onions. Serve with shredded cheese in warmed tortillas. Sour cream optional but totally recommended!

4.  Hell or High Watermelon Sorbet
