from the purple carpet as Kerry was being interviewed, her direct quote
was: “Knowing purple is the signature color for domestic violence, I
worked with designer Dee Ocleppo to create a new limited edition Purple Purse –
to represent the center of a woman’s financial domain and inspire survivors to
reclaim their financial independence. Together, we wanted to create an on-trend
clutch that women can carry with pride – putting financial control and freedom
directly into their hands. This powerful symbol, the Allstate Foundation Purple
Purse, will ignite fundraising in the Purple Purse Challenge for more than 160
national, state and local organizations to provide life-changing services to
domestic violence survivors across the country.”
Unexpectedly, Kerry Washington, AKA Olivia Pope, bolted form the purple carpet once she heard the ‘other’ Pope was just around the corner. Camera crews from Access Hollywood and ET trailed Scandal star Kerry Washington when she bolted to the nearest exit to stand among thousands as the Holy Father drove by in his signature FIAT. Both Kerry and I were neck and neck standing on our toes to catch a glimpse of the Pope as he waived in our direction. I screamed ‘Papa!’ and she exploded in cheers as the cameras quickly interviewed her about seeing the Pope. (Access Hollywood didn’t ask me for my reaction.) It certainly didn’t take long for the jubilant crowd to notice the Olivia Pope was among fellow New Yorkers. Pandemonium erupted and, within seconds, iPhones turned from the departing FIAT to Kerry and clicked away. Only in New York.
Back inside, after the Pope sighting, other notables at the event included Alicia Keys hiding out in the stairwell waiting for Lisa Manice, President of Dee Ocleppo, to escort her to the Purple carpet. She briefly chatted with myself and my colleague Rachel about Kid’s Couture where Fendi jackets start at a mere $1,500 for six months olds. Alicia couldn’t have been nicer. The Oak Room was soon filled with Tommy Hilfiger taking pictures with guests, Robin Roberts of ABC Good Morning America, and assorted housewives from the famed reality series on Bravo.
