Five years in the making, New York at Its Core is the first-ever museum show to comprehensively interpret and present the compelling story of New York’s rise from a striving Dutch village to today’s “Capital of the World”; a preeminent global city now facing the future in a changing world. Occupying the entire first floor in three interactive galleries of the Museum’s landmark building on New York’s Museum Mile, New York at Its Core is shaped by four themes – money, density, diversity, and creativity – that provide a lens for examining the character of the city. The exhibition shows how a distinctive blend of these key themes has produced a powerfully creative environment that has made New York a center of innovation in the arts, business, science, politics, and urban development.
The Museum of the City of New York is in the midst of a continuing celebration regarding its transformational 10-year, $97 million renovation as it prepares to open New York at Its Core. This renovation marks the largest expansion and modernization project in the Museum’s history.
The opening of New York at Its Core will be celebrated with an event built to match the scope and impact of the Museum’s biggest exhibition ever: a weekend-long public festival celebrating NYC and the relaunch of the Museum called Gotham Groove: 32 Hours of Nonstop NYC. “We are thrilled to present Gotham Groove – an exhilarating weekend festival celebrating New York City and its rich and diverse past, present, and future,” said Whitney Donhauser, Ronay Menschel Director of the Museum of the City of New York. “We welcome New Yorkers and visitors to our city to join this first-of-its-kind celebration marking the launch of New York at Its Core.”
