It’s that time of the year again! Bring out your American flag clothing and your patriotic gear. Most commonly, the Fourth of July is a time where we gather with our loved ones and have a barbeque and find a spot to watch the fireworks in our respective cities. In the case of New York City most locals flee the island to spend it else where, whether it may be somewhere in the Hamptons or with their friends who are (un)lucky enough to live in a place other than NYC. Well, whether you’re staying and going we’ve got some great ideas for you to incorporate into your plans. Take these recipes and these ideas and celebrate our great nation!
Decor is definitely one of the easiest tasks when it comes to this special day. Stores all over the city will have flags, streamers and various patriotic paraphilia. Looking for a fun DIY project? Grab some red, white and blue streamers and hang them over your twinkle lights. What’s a barbeque with out twinkle lights?! Next, paper napkins are SO out. Grab some (of course) red, white and blue bandanas from your local dollar store. Voila, the perfect napkin! Don’t forget, humans can be décor too! When you’re hosting your barbeque it is absolutely essential to dress in your best reds, your best whites, and your best blues!
Next, comes my favorite part, the
food and drink. Before we give you some great menu items that will add
something special to your BBQ, try this sparkling red, white & blue sangria!
Grab the following:
Dry White Wine
Dry Champagne or Prosecco
Grab another large dispenser; stir a bottle of white wine, a couple cups of fresh blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Stir all together with a cup of apple juice then refrigerate. Let it sit in the fridge to mix. Once ready to serve, gradually stir in a bottle of champagne and add star-shaped pieces of apple. Yum!
Finally the good stuff, I have prepared the ultimate menu additions to really create the perfect Fourth of July barbeque. It’s summer! Embrace the delicious fruit that’s in season and start things off with a fabulous strawberry caprese salad.
1/2 Cup Crumbled Feta
1/4 Cup Olive Oil
Salt & Pepper to Taste
In a large bowl, combine cubed watermelon, chopped strawberries, a half cup of crumbled feta and a fourth cup of olive oil. Toss with salt, and pepper and garnish with fresh basil. So fresh, and soo tasty!
You don’t need me to tell you that you absolutely must have hamburgers, hot dogs and barbeque chicken/steaks, but for a fun addition, try adding chicken bacon ranch skewers.
Chicken Breast, Chunks
Ranch Dressing (or Greek yogurt alternative)
In a medium bowl stir together a cup of ranch dressing (trying to be healthier? Use Greek Yogurt and a packet of ranch seasoning), lemon juice and cayenne. Toss chicken breast chunks in marinade and season with salt and pepper. Assemble skewers with a piece of bacon, add a piece of chicken, then weave the bacon back over the skewer. Add a cherry tomato and then weave the bacon back over. Repeat using two pieces of bacon per skewer. On a piece of foil in your grill place the skewers and cook until crispy (about 8 minutes). Drizzle with ranch and garnish with chives and enjoy!
Last (and my favorite part), dessert! Summer has definitely hit, and we have quickly entered 90 degree humid weather. Cool down with this (semi) healthy dessert that the whole family will love.
Here's what you will need:
Vanilla Greek Yogurt
Dixie Cups & Popsicle Sticks
Use a cupcake tray and fill with small Dixie cups. Throw a dollop of vanilla yogurt in the bottom of the paper cup, add some blueberries, some more yogurt, a sliced strawberry or two and more yogurt. Put in a popsicle stick cut in half and pop them in the freezer over night. These frozen treats will be both refreshing and tasty!
