Who Creates Food Holidays?
by Beth Kaiserman

In the wacky world of Instagram, you’ll see celebrations of foods daily. National Chocolate Day. National Chocolate Cake Day. National Chocolate Pudding Day. (You can see where our loyalties lie.) Who made up these food holidays?

Chase's Calendar of Events was created in 1958 to track holidays and in 1959 acquired the publication "Special Days, Weeks and Months." The first edition had June Dairy Month, National Honey Month, National Hot Tea Month and a candymaker-created Sweetest Day.

Perhaps the first real food holiday was National Ice Cream Day on July 9, 1984 when Ronald Reagan declared ice cream “a nutritious and wholesome food.” National Frozen Food Day and Catfish Day were two other Reagan-created holidays that were all intended to happen just once.

National Doughnut Day came from the Salvation Army serving doughnuts to soldiers in WWI. The doughnuts were fried inside helmets.

In 2013, Marlo Anderson launched National Day Calendar to track the many national holidays. He receives thousands of entries per year, which are reviewed by a four-person committee before making it onto the site. The cost? $2,300-$4,000 dollars to be officially added – also a framed

John-Bryan Hopkins is the brain behind Foodimentary, a blog that's been creating new food holidays and spreading them to social media since 2005. As of 2016, he’d created 450 holidays, some based off of about 200 that already existed somehow.

For restaurants, food holidays are a great way to reel in customers. Create a dish based on a food holiday. Post on social media to promote it.

For food lovers, it’s an excuse to celebrate food on a regular day. Eat, cook, and enjoy!
