At this perfect moment between Engagement Season and Wedding Season, our focus is on the year ahead and all the fabulous trends we’ll see come to life for our couples. These are a few that we can’t get enough of, illustrated in a stunning photo shoot we held at the always classic Wave Hill!
We saw these begin to emerge with Naked Cakes in 2016 and can’t wait to see where 2017 takes us. We suspect that dairy free Olive Oil Cakes will be a highlight, as well as more Naked and Translucent Cakes, garnished with fresh fruit, edible flowers, and just the right amount of buttercream.
I also can’t
wait to see cakes continue to become actual works of art. We love the above Marbled & Metallic
Cake that Nine Cakes created (above) for a recent
photo shoot we did at Wave Hill. This masterpiece tagged all 5 of my senses –
looked gorgeous, smelled divine, tasted incredible, sounded… quiet like cake?,
and made me feel things like a piece
of art would. I stare at this image and want to get swept away. Anyone else? Do
I sound crazy? Okay, moving on.
OBSESSED with texture this season. I want it in your food, on your table, and
even on your body (hi, sequins and hand sewn appliques!) The pinnacle of this trend for me is velvet and lace. For our Wave Hill photo shoot every piece had its own unique feel, all working
together to create a tactile experience. Oh, to be a guest at that wedding!
We did not skimp on the texture for our Spring/Summer look. In fact, we went texture on texture on texture (on texture, and so on). We’ve got a paisley-patterned lace linen, followed by a woven rattan charger, then two different patterns of embossed china. Top that with this fabulous vintage cut glass and we’re in texture heaven. We also wanted to subtly mirror the centerpiece with our paper goods, so we built a whimsical floral border out of the amazing digital catalog offered by the New York Public Library.
Mix & Match
I don’t know about you, but when I think Spring, I think of flowers. They represent new life, a fresh start, and of course warm weather. That said, why should the florist get to have all the fun?! We wanted to incorporate the blooms of Springtime in the catering piece as well – this means a Spring Melon Mosaic with edible blossoms like Micro Lovage, Borage, and Sunflower Sprouts. We worked with the talented Denise Fasanello on our floral arrangements for this shoot, and could not be happier with her style and eye for color, season, and mood.
From Laura Remmert, our collaborator on this shoot and owner of Laura Remmert Events, "We’re seeing clients become more selective (and more creative!) with their table top design and place settings. If you're renting plates, glassware, linens, etc. outside of your own pieces, you might as well have some fun with the unlimited options available to you! Select a decorative charger/show plate or a patterned napkin to add an extra element of decor. Play around with mixing styles, choose modern glassware and a formal, traditional charger. Go mismatched and mix patterns and table settings - you can still curate an elegant and refined look outside of blush and white. Create a look that is completely unique to what you have seen before, and reflects the taste and style you have!"
You & You.
As planners and caterers, we do our best to come up with new and cool ideas for
our brides and grooms. That said, some of my favorite aspects of weddings are
those that the client comes up with themselves – those special touches that
only they could bring to the table. So whether your wedding includes one of the
above trends, or things that would only make sense for you, we can’t wait to be
a part of it!
