Upstate is beautiful always but especially so in the Fall – with vibrant orange leaves and delicious Fall bounty. We asked some upstaters for their best Fall spots in the glorious Hudson Valley.

Food & Farms

Quaker Creek Store on Pine Island: Rare that I make a trip to the Black Dirt without a stop here. From the Brat, to the smoked ham, the potato salad and deli sandwiches, frozen pierogies, you name it - worth a detour.

Speaking of detours, I don’t mind jumping off the thruway and extending my trip by 45 minutes to hit Mrs. London Bakery in Saratoga Springs. The sandwiches are perfection and pretty much any bread or pastry they make will have you smiling for hours and dream of the next long trip north.

Right next door is Max London’s - there’s never an overnight that doesn’t include a phenomenal meal there; got me to eat pork after 15 years of abstinence. Other spots: Holy Cow Ice Cream in Red Hook, Farmer’s Wife for take-out in Ancramdale, and I do always find the various Bread Alone cafes solid for a snack and a beverage.

Little Ghent Farm for weekend stays, Berry Farm’s new butcher shop in Chatham and my favorite brunch spot, Bartlett House, in Ghent.

Magdalena’s in Valatie, NY: the perfect hole in the wall: poor lighting, 10 tables, sodas in a yogurt display, clicking sounds from refrigerator fan blades  (most days) and pink walls. Magdalena’s was launched after the sellout Friday afternoons at the Chatham Farmers Market serving take out. I’ve been a regular from day one. My favorites: cheese chiles rellenos, chicken tostadas and the amazing plate of carnitas.

By far my most favorite place to be at, walk around, eat, relax, and enjoy is Katchkie Farm! I also enjoy the Hawthorne Valley Store. It's a lovely drive and fun to see what’s in the store, art hanging in the cafe and, of course, people watching.

Golden Harvest Farms in Valatie, NY: best cider doughnuts ever. And Harvest Spirits Distillery. The Flammerie in Kinderhook, NY: Everything is always exceptionally delicious. Owners Connie and Andrew are good, friendly people, always connecting with customers. 

Samascott's Garden Market: best homemade ice cream I've ever had. Very creamy. Fruit flavors are made from their own fruit!

Suarez Family Brewery in Livingston, NY is a mom and pop brewery with great unfiltered ales.

Chaseholm Farm in Pine Plains, NY: raw milk, sauerkraut, farmstead cheeses

Sparrowbush Farm in Hudson, NY: vegetables, fresh milled grains and eggs

Gaskins in Germantown, NY: a classic, rustic tavern serving locally-sourced fare
