The tone for nonprofit events this spring is one of optimism, hope and good works underscored by the need to raise funds for organizations that help children, fight disease, protect the environment and defend animals. Last year taught us one major lesson: in the midst of an economic storm, the generosity of those willing to help – regardless of their own situations - can really make a difference.
The spring social season at the Plaza Hotel kicks off with HELP USA celebrating their annual gala on March 2nd in the Grand Ballroom. Maria Cuomo Cole, Chair of the Board, will honor General Petreus. HELP USA is one of the nation's leading nonprofits, which provides programs for families in crisis dealing from domestic violence, homelessness and HIV/AIDS. 40 children performing on stage who have benefited from the various social services provided by HELP USA will highlight the evening.
Next in line is the annual Bergh Ball for ASPCA - an evening of celebration for every dog and cat lover in New York. The signature for the evening is not the standard black tie or designer ball gown but rather notable New Yorkers who are escorted by their dog to the gala. The tasting, scheduled for next week, will feature our organic French breast of chicken with mashed potatoes – a beef entrée is never even considered. Last year, NBC's veteran anchor Chuck Scarborough's rescue dog enjoyed chicken and fresh water at tableside. At the end of the evening, some of the guests will not just go home with a gift bag but with a new family member as well: at the cocktail reception, many of ASPCA's most heartfelt rescue dogs are on their best behavior in the hopes that someone will adopt them on the spot.
Environmental preservation is always a vital mission bringing out the biggest names in New York Society. Who more capable than Allison Rockefeller to spearhead the annual Rachel Carson awards luncheon for the National Audubon Society? In 2008, Bette Midler received this coveted award for cleaning up garbage in New York's City parks and highways and in recognition of her work with the New York Restoration Project.
I must say I do have a top favorite of the spring social season and it is KIDS of NYU Foundation. Founded in 1991 by a group of parents and pediatric doctors, KiDS has since raised more than 20 million. Their mission is clear and simple: In partnership with Langone Medical Center, KiDS enhances clinical and supportive care for children and families, to fund research into childhood illnesses and to promote a child-friendly atmosphere. As they return for their third year in our Ballroom, we continue to be inspired by the professional staff, the commitment of volunteer parents and the importance of supporting a medical environment that focuses on the unique needs of sick children and their families.
The busy calendar rounds out with Katie Couric being honored by the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at the Mirror Awards luncheon, Gilda’s Club, Northside Center for Childhood Development and Ballet Hispanco. It is a packed season of celebrating and giving.
I am pleased to report that the endless banter about how tough these times are for nonprofits are set aside the moment when the lights go down, the wine glass is filled, the hot bite-sized canapés are placed on beautiful trays and the first glass of champagne is served. As the doors to the Grand Ballroom open to welcome those who do make a difference in the lives of so many, we are filled with enormous pride as their partner for an evening.
