How did you get started in the fashion business?
I started with $150 and a dream, taking a trip to New York City to find bell-bottom jeans.  I opened my first store, People’s Place, in Elmira, New York when I was still in high school.

Where were you born?
I was born upstate in Elmira, New York and was one of nine children.

What was the moment when you said “Wow I have really made it”?
There have been a lot of exciting milestones – from my first menswear collection in 1985 to celebrating our 25th Anniversary last year. But I’m always thinking of the next challenge – I believe there is always room to grow.

What do you love about the Plaza?
The Plaza is a beautiful and historical place to live. I love the views of Central Park and running there in the mornings.

If you could have dinner with three people tonight who would it be?
It would be an interesting group: Seth Meyers, who was incredibly funny and entertaining at the Autism Speaks event; Brian Williams, who I really respect and always watch on NBC’s Nightly News; and Theophilus London, whose music I’ve been enjoying.

If you could design an outfit for anyone who would that person be?
I would love to work with Meryl Streep. She has an all-American style that gives her a very classic, cool look.

You are very philanthropic and set the example for many to follow.  What are your favorite charities?
I have been fortunate to be involved with many great charities over the years.  Since we founded The Tommy Hilfiger Corporate Foundation in 1995, we have partnered with The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Foundation, Millennium Promise, The Race to Erase MS, JDRF and Autism Speaks, to name a few.

You were honored this month at the Plaza at “A Funny Affair for Autism”.  What did it mean to you to receive this wonderful accolade?
The evening meant more to me than just the award. It was about honoring the children and families who suffer with the trauma and frustrations that autism brings.

What do you do for fun?
I love spending time with family and listening to music. Catching a live performance with my wife Dee, and having dinner with my children are the best ways to relax.

If you hadn’t become a fashion icon, what would you have pursued as a career?
I would have loved to be a musician.
