Sylvia Weinstock

Where were you born?
I am a true New Yorker. I was born in New York, went to Washington Irving High school, Hunter College and Queens College at Columbia University.

What do you love about New York?
I love New York for it diversity, density, excitement. Everything one could wish for is here. Food, theatre, shopping, museums, galleries, parks etc. are all available.

What are your favorite places to travel to?

I Love NY on holiday weekends when the city is empty. Who needs to travel elsewhere?

How did you get started in the cake business?
I started in this business 35 years ago baking cakes for small restaurants rather than substitute teach.

What was the most memorable cake you ever made?
All of our cakes are unique and designed for the individual bride or birthday person.

How far have your cakes travelled to?
Cakes have travelled around the world. Turkey, Morocco, Ireland, France, Sardinia and even Mumbai, India!

Who inspires you?
Everything inspires me, from the design of a dress to jewelry, lampposts etc.  Design is everywhere.  One must only open your eyes and there it is.

If you didn’t become the Queen of cakes what would you have done?

If I did not go into the cake business I suppose I would be searching for something fulfilling. Perhaps I would be doing volunteer work in a foreign country working with poor, young people.

When you retire what will you do?
I hope never to retire but to carve out more personal space and learn to let go a bit to my trusted employees.  I hope to expand the business overseas, that should keep me busy and active.

How did your glasses become such a signature look for you?

My glasses became a signature look as I wear them all the time and people recognize and remember me because of the large, black, oversized look.

Who do you most admire?

I admire anyone who takes risks, has integrity and loyalty, honesty and kindness.

Do you like sugar?

As for, do I like sweets?  The treat of the day is a vodka drink with my husband.
