Employee Volunteer Program

As part of our mission to give back to the community, Great Performances created the GP Employee Volunteer Program to encourage our Great Performers to also be Great Volunteers. This program enables them to volunteer 2-3 hours per week of company time with a chosen organization. So whether their passion is feeding the hungry, tutoring children, or caring for animals (to name just a few), we want them to make a difference in the world, especially the world around us.

A New Partnership at Providence House

Of the many outlets for volunteering – and the many nonprofit organizations based in the city – the ones I find most meaningful are those that enable individuals to become self-reliant where they were once unstable, impoverished, or powerless.

From Katchkie Couch Potato to Marathoner

Days of training: 101; Total miles logged to date: 564; Pounds lost: 0; Number of broken toes: 1; Miles to go: too many to count.

It's an awfully humid day in mid-August. I'm on mile 10 and I have 3 more to go.  I'm dehydrated, hurting and becoming delirious and it's at this point that I start humming to myself (to the tune of Phil Collins' "Another Day in Paradise):

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been crying
She's got blisters on the soles of her feet
Can't walk but she's trying

Oh, think twice....

Can someone please tell me why I'm doing this?  I mean, I'm not a runner and it's not like I enjoy doing it.  I'm reminded of what a friend of mine recently said to me.  I don't get the point in running a marathon.  If you know you're not going to win, what's the point in racing?

Volunteering is the Cat's Meow

About once a month I fall asleep with my fingers ready to hit "snooze" in a few hours. At around 4:15 AM, after the alarm and I have reconciled our differences, I am ready to leave the apartment wearing one of my favorite pieces of clothing: my white polo shirt from Animal Care and Control of New York City.

Finding My Roots

We grow things at Great Performances, but how do you get to your roots?

I had to ask myself that question when I decided I wanted to do a little volunteer work. Liz has encouraged us and supported any efforts we bring to the table that connect us to our communities, so I went for my metaphoric roots.

Mind Your Manners!

Not too long ago, Great Performances' "Etiquette Experts" made our way to P.S. 180 in Harlem to teach a class of 8th-graders all we knew about proper place-settings and table-manners. Josh Satterthwaite, our Operations Manager who oversees the training of our entire Catering Service Staff, and I, the GP liaison for the Katchkie Farm-supported Farmers Market at P.S. 180, both proud graduates of southern Cotillion, did not hesitate when asked to teach the class: "Yes, please! We love P.S. 180!"
